Listening to works by the English composer Jonathan Dove on YouTube today I came across ‘The End‘, his wonderful setting of a text by the American poet Mark Strand who died last year. The poem is from Strand’s collection The Continuous Life (1990), also included in New Selected Poems (2014). Dove’s magical setting was written for tenor Mark Padmore and the Britten Sinfonia and had its premiere in 2012.
I was listening to Dove after hearing his glorious Christmas piece ‘The Three Kings’ performed a couple of weeks ago by a local Oxford choir, Commotio. I love the way the music becomes more complex and intense with each verse and then returns to the quiet simplicity of the opening.
Two pieces to enjoy over the holiday season.
